Going strong since 1876 is Queensland's greatest annual show, the EKKA was
first known as the Intercolonial Exhibition. Every year town and
country are brought together to exhibit their assets - their cattle,
horses, sheep, pigs, new inventions, artwork, food, crafts, music, and
more.
A Bit of EKKA History...The first Exhibition was a five day event held at Bowen Park on
August 22, 1876 where a surging crowd of 17, 000 showgoers (Brisbane's
population at the time was just 22, 000!) paid just one shilling to see
the show. Mounted troopers had to hold them back as they surged through
the turnstiles!
The first showbag was a free sample bag of coal of all things and
just as they do today, showgoers watched horse and cattle parades. In
1876, the EKKA held 1000 exhibits, today it holds over 30, 000 and
whilst the showgrounds are larger and more advanced, the feeling of
excitement and wonder can still be seen on the faces of young and old
alike.
