Brisbane Shopping
In the city, shops are open until 9pm on a Friday night and in the suburbs, until 9pm on a Thursday evening. On Sunday, stores are normally open from 10am-4pm in the city. If you need something outside of these shopping hours, there's always a service station or 7-Eleven open to meet your pressing, urgent needs.

The major Supermarkets (grocery stores) are Coles and Woolworths (Woolies). Coles and Woolworths have a virtual monopoly on food and grocery all over Australia. You will find fruits and vegetables, frozen foods, canned goods, meat, bread, laundry and cleaning supplies, personal needs and non-prescription drugs.

Of course you may not get the brands you are used to. Supermarkets in Queensland are not permitted to sell alcoholic beverages. As these two retailing giants are now getting into the 'grog' business, you will often find a bottle shop (off licence) nearby.

An alternative to Coles and Woolies is IGA (Independent Grocers Asscociation), Foodworks , Action , ALDI . These independent supermarkets are an option if you are not into giving your money to one of the large corporations. The German retailing outfit Aldi is active in Australia, but Brisbane has very few stores.

Other shops such as K-Mart, Target, and Best and Less are known for inexpensive clothing and household items. Myers and David Jones tend to be more expensive. Hours of opening are usually 9:00am to 5:30pm (Monday to Friday), and 9:00am to 4pm on Saturday.

Asian, Indian and Islander grocery shops can be found around Chinatown in Brunswick St, New Farm and Vulture St in West End.

Asian groceries are also available around Sunnybank and Inala (I think) which both have a high percentage of Asian residents.

If you are looking to buy new furniture and appliances, K-Mart, AMart, the Good Guys, and Target stores are to be found in most of the larger shopping centres. These stores are reasonably priced at the lower end of the market. A list of locations can be found in the telephone directory.

Brisbane has a large IKEA in Logan as well at IKEA Logan, 3539-3565 Pacific Highway, Slacks Creek QLD 4127. Phone (07) 3380 6800. Opening hours at IKEA are:
Mon - Wed, Fri 10 am to 7 pm
Thurs 10 am to 9 pm
Sat and Sun 9 am to 5 pm

A Short History of Brisbane
TreasuryCasino Before European settlement, Brisbane was originally home to the Jagera and Turrbal Aboriginal clans. The river's abundant supply of food included fish, shellfish, crabs and shrimps. The good fishing places became campsites and the focus of group activities. Then in May 1770 Captain James Cook sailed past Moreton Bay naming the Glass House Mountains. Although Captain Matthew Flinders anchored inside Cape Moreton in 1799, naming Red Cliff (now Redcliff) and Woody Point.
