The Brisbane City Council governs an area of 1,220km2 with a population of 882,259. Apart from the shires surrounding Brisbane, there are also distinctions to be found amongst Brisbane City's suburbs from east to west and north to south, as well as everywhere in between. Knowing a little more about these areas will help you answer the question "Where do I Live in Brisbane?"
Inner City Brisbane
Brisbane's inner city incorporates the CBD along with the inner
city subrubs of Spring Hill, Kangaroo Point, Fortitude Valley, New
Farm, Newstead and Teneriffe. Here you'll find a diverse range of
people from those that have lived here all their lives, to young
successful professional wanting to live closer to where all the action
is. Chic new high rise apartments abound and you'll find no shortage of
nightclubs, cafes and restaurants
within walking distance from
anywhere!
Inner Northern Suburbs Brisbane
In the chic and influential inner northern suburbs you'll find some of Brisbane's most prestigious suburbs with
upwardly mobile residents. Suburbs include Hendra, Wooloowin,
Clayfield, Ascot, Hamilton, Albion, Lutwyche, Windsor, Wilston,
Newmarket, Kelvin Grove, Herston, Gordon Park, Grange and Bowen Hills.
A variety of restaurants abound particularly in Ascot, Hamilton, Wilston and Albion.
North-Eastern Suburbs Brisbane
The suburbs north-east of Brisbane include a number of new
housing estates in Bracken Ridge, Bridgeman Downs, Carseldine and
Boondall, providing constant growth to the businesses in the area.
Direct bus and rail services link the area to the city centre. There
are a number of large industrial estates of both light and heavy
industry at Geebung and Zillmere. This area also takes in the growing
Brisbane Airport precinct and Nundah, Nudgee, Northgate, Banyo and
Eagle Farm. The main shopping centres in the area are Christies
Homemaker Centre, Westfield Chermside, Woolworths Market Place, Aspley
Hypermarket and Taigum Central.
North-Western Suburbs Brisbane The suburbs north-west of Brisbane include long-established
established suburbs as well as a series of new housing estates in its
western fringes. A major army barracks located at Enoggera attracts
many defence families to the area and contributes to a relatively high
population turnover. Six main shopping centres serve the area:
Brookside Shopping Centre, Stafford City Shopping Centre, Arana Hills
KMart Plaza, Flockton Village, Lutwyche City, Great Western Super
Centre and McDowall Village. Suburbs include Ferny Hills, Arana Hills,
Ferny Grove, Keperra, Everton Hills, Everton Park, Eatons Hill, Albany
Creek, Mitchelton, McDowall, Stafford Heights, Stafford, Gordon Park,
Enoggera, Alderley, Grange, Bunya and Samford Village.
Western Suburbs Brisbane The suburbs west of Brisbane incorporate the prestigious
Western Corrider. Suburbs include St Lucia, Ironside, Long Pocket,
Indooroopilly, Taringa, Chapel Hill, Fig Tree Pocket, Kenmore, Pinjarra
Hills, Brookfield, Upper Brookfield, Pullenvale, Moggill, Bellbowrie,
Karana Downs, Anstead, Mt Coottha, The Gap, Ashgrove, Bardon, Red Hill,
Paddington, Milton, Auchenflower and Toowong. Inner suburbs such as Paddington, Milton an Auchenflower are where you'll find some great restaurant choices. Similrly, there are plenty of places to eat out as you head further west. Located just 4km from Brisbane's
CBD on the Brisbane River,
Toowong caters to all tastes, from university students from all over Queensland
and overseas to upwardly mobile professionals, to residents who have lived in
Toowong all their lives. Toowong is a commercial precinct (uniquely identified
by its blue Toowong Village Towers),
a restaurant precinct, a night spot (the Regatta Hotel and Royal Exchange Hotel
are ideal places to party or just relax with a cold beer), a shopping area and
a family friendly residential area with its parks and cycling tracks.
Toowong is also home to the exclusive Brisbane
Boys College
(affectionately known as BBC). In Toowong you'll find many residential units,
the building of which has been largely influenced by the many university
students who choose to live in Toowong, close to Queensland
University.
Southern Suburbs Brisbane
The suburbs south of Brisbane have a distinct demographic mix. The
southern areas around Rocklea and Archerfield have a lot of industry
and commerce. Through the Moorooka region is the "Magic Mile"
of motor
dealers. In the northern region is the commercial area of West End and
the South Bank Parklands where you'll find many restaurants and cafes
to enjoy. The more established suburbs contain many
original residents who are generally older, without children at home
and are retiring.
However, there is an increasing trend towards medium density
housing. The two major shopping centres serving the area are Fairfield
Gardens and Buranda Shopping Centre. There are a number of general
shopping areas such as West End, Annerley Junction, Yeronga Village and
the Moorooka Mall. Suburbs include Archerfield, South Brisbane, West
End, Highgate Hill, Dutton Park, Woolloongabba, Fairfield, Annerley,
Yeronga, Yeerongpilly, Moorooka, Tarragindi and Rocklea.
Inner South-Eastern Suburbs Brisbane
The inner south east suburbs of Brisbane have a blend of old and new
suburbs. Some older suburbs are Balmoral and Norman Park, while
Carindale and Carina Heights are among of the relatively new suburbs.
There are some quite prestigious suburbs in the area such as Hawthorne
and Bulimba.
There also has been an increase in unit development in suburbs
closer to the city such as Balmoral, Hawthorne and Coorparoo. Logan
Road from Woolloongabba to Stones Corner and Holland Park is
experiencing a boom in new business developments due to
decentralisation of the city area.
The major shopping centre servicing the area is Carindale Shopping
Centre, with other shopping areas including Cannon Hill Kmart Plaza,
Greenslopes Mall, Morningside Shopping Precinct and Stones Corner
Village. Suburbs in this area include: Bulimba, Balmoral, Hawthorne,
East Brisbane, Morningside, Norman Park, Cannon Hill, Murarrie, Carina,
Carindale, Kangaroo Point, Woolloongabba, Greenslopes, Coorparoo, Camp
Hill, Carina Heights, Holland Park and Holland Park West.
South-Eastern Suburbs Brisbane
The suburbs south east of Brisbane combine new suburbs mixed
with established middle to upmarket areas. The industrial suburbs in
the area include Acacia Ridge, Mansfield, Salisbury and Coopers Plains,
whilst commerce and retail are concentrated in Mt. Gravatt, Sunnybank
and Runcorn.
Upper Mt Gravatt which is one of the most important business centres
outside of the Brisbane CBD and is served by one of the best public
transport networks in Brisbane. The major shopping centres in the area
include Garden City, Sunnybank Plaza, Sunnybank Hills Shopping Centre,
Palmdale Shopping Centre, Market Square, Mt Gravatt Central and Runcorn
Plaza.
Around the Sunnybank area you'll find a very strong chinese and asian community making it a great place to dine out .
Many national and multi-national retailers are represented in this
area. Suburbs in this area include: Mt Gravatt East, Mansfield,
Mackenzie, Nathan Heights, Salisbury, Coopers Plains, Acacia Ridge, Mt
Gravatt, Upper Mt Gravatt, MacGregor, Wishart, Eight Mile Plains,
Kuraby, Robertson, Sunnybank, Sunnybank Hills, Runcorn, Algester,
Calamvale, Stretton and Parkinson.
South-Western Suburbs Brisbane
The suburbs south west of Brisbane is one of the
fastest-growing areas of South-East Queensland. The area covers the
rapidly-expanding Lakes District and the suburbs of the Centenary belt
south of the Brisbane River as well as Darra and Durack. Residents and
businesses are united in their common interest in issues such as
traffic flow, development and real estate, residential migration, work
opportunities and local events.
These suburbs include: Jindalee, Mount Ommaney, Westlake, Oxley,
Durack, Doolandella, Ellen Grove, Forest Lake, Riverhills, Middle Park,
Jamboree Heights, Sinnamon Park, Seventeen Mile Rocks, Sumner, Darra,
Gailes, Goodna, Camira, Carole Park, Springfield, Springfield Lakes,
Augustine Heights and Brookwater.
