Because many animals introduced into Queensland and, indeed, Australia such as the rabbit have become serious pests, damaging Queensland's environment and economy, the importation and keeping of some animals as pets is prohibited by law.

Prohibited mammals, reptiles and amphibians include, but are not limited to dingoes and wild dogs; feral pigs; ferrets; foxes; gerbils; hamsters; monkeys; rabbits; squirrels; and weasels. You can find more information on prohibited pets at http://www.nrw.qld.gov.au/pests/pest_animals/prohibited_pets.html

And when it comes to keeping native mammals, reptiles and amphibians, this is controlled by the Environmental Protection Agency.
