Getting Around Brisbane
Live Brisbane Traffic Cams

For a city the size of Brisbane you might be surprised at the traffic problems the government faces. Rapid growth and the reliance on private vehicles for transport have far outstripped the investment in public transport and road infrastructure making some Brisbane roads a nightmare during peak times.

Before you travel it's a good idea to check how the traffic is on your route. You can do this by viewing one of the many live traffic cams listed on this page.

Pedestrians
In trying to reduce the number of pedestrians killed or injured in Brisbane city, police are cracking down on pedestrians who break the law and disobeys traffic signals. As a guide, more than 2000 offence notices were given out in the Brisbane CBD during the first six months of 2007.

The rules are that if you cross the street within 20 meters of a traffic control signal (traffic light) or when the 'Don't Walk' signal is illuminated, you could be slapped with a fine. It is also illegal to walk where there are 'No Pedestrians' signs and on the road instead of on the footpath. So be careful, obey the signs and you could save your money
and your life.

Australian Spiders

Of the between 5,000 and 10,000 people that get bitten by spiders in Australia each year, only about 200 require anti-venom treatment. In Brisbane, there are about 40 different species of spiders, the more dangerous being the Funnel Web spider, the Redback spider and Mouse Spiders.

The poisonous Funnel Web Spider can kill within 15 minutes of biting a person and those living in any suburbs near mountains or rainforests (such as Kedron Brook, Kenmore and The Gap) should especially look out for these spiders. Rain tends to bring spiders indoors, taking shelter from wet weather in dark, dry places such as shoes, gloves and clothing.
