If you travel west of Brisbane, past Ipswich, you'll soon be climbing the Great Dividing Range to Toowoomba (1hour 15 min) and the rich farmland plain of the Darling Downs.
These Downs stretch more than 100km across the maintain tabletop before
falling to much drier regions on the other side. Ultimately, if you
keep going you will run out of road and find yourself in Australia's
outback.
The Stradboke Island Car Ferry To the east, Moreton Bay
and its islands offer water sports, sailing and a sea-side lifestyle.
Although the seaside immediately adjacent Brisbane is dominated by
industry and mangroves, with surprisingly few beaches and no surf,
getting off-shore opens up a playground for safe water sports dotted
with fantastic sand islands such as North and South Stradbroke Island
where you can camp bush-style or stay in a fabulous five star resort.
North Stradbroke Island is one of (or is) the largest sand islands in
the world.
Although Moreton Bay is protected by these islands, you can't afford
to be flippant about safety and from time-to-time, even the locals can
get into trouble taking that protection for granted. If you would like
to visit these islands for a day, or a week, you don't need a boat
though, passenger ferries and even a car ferry travel regularly to
these islands though you will need a four wheel drive vehicle in most
cases.
