Brisbane Overview
These tropical Queenslanders are designed this way to allow cool breezes to flow underneath in warmer weather , but they can also help protect from the occaisional flash flooding brisbane used to experience in its early days.

These houses are called Queenslanders (the even more grand ones are called Grand Colonials) and they are quite unique to Australia's north, though many are now being built in to provide additional living space, the Queenslanders give Brisbane architecture a startling point of difference for those more used to brick and terrace houses. Although beautiful to behold, these houses are not for everyone, many (if not all) new residences being built in Brisbane are two story brick/stucco dwellings.

Brisbane City Council

The Brisbane City Council area is one of (if not the) largest municpal council areas in the world, brisbane is a spread out city and although the past ten years have seen a resurgence in inner-city living, most people live some distance from the CBD.

This can be quite charming in some areas as you can live 30 minutes from a major city and still enjoy acreage living. You can sometimes find cows and horses residing in areas that would surprise anybody moving to Brisbane from other large cities.

While the sprawl continues and many of these places are being progressively built out, it's still possible to buy two or three acre lots for prices you would pay for an inner-city apartment in Australia's southern cities.

Brisbane is about to get even bigger, the Gold Coast, only an hour from Brisbane to the south, Ipswich, about 45 minutes to the west and even the Sunshine Coast to the north are quickly merging into one large urban area which the town planners say will one day eclipse Sydney and Melbourne as Australia's largest population center.

Exploring South-East Queensland

The Gold Coast lies to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, making Brisbane an ideal launching pad for an Australian holiday.

As a gateway to the Whitsunday Islands, Cairns, and the Daintree Rainforest area in the Far North, the Queensland coast marks the first leg of many traveller's around Australia trip taking in Darwin and the Kakadu in the Nother Territory, Broome in northern Western Australia, Perth, across the Great Australian Bight to Adelaide, Melbourne and then back to Brisbane via Sydney.

You don't have to travel that far from Brisbane to experience the wonder of the Australian landscape though. The Pacific Highway leads you south to the Gold Coast and its well-known surf beaches . While the Gold Coast hinterland area provides access to some of the World's Heritage listed rainforest.

Travelling north you'll find the picturesque scenery of the Glasshouse Mountains and the quaint simplicity of Bribie Island which offers the first surf beach to the north. Continue travelling north and you'll hit the popular holiday region of the Sunshine Coast including the hustle and bustle of Noosa's chic holiday resorts.

Cane Toads
The cane toad (Bufo marinus) is one of Queensland's best-known feral animals. Originally from South America, cane toads came from Hawaii in 1935 when 3, 400 Cane toads were released into far north Queensland cane fields to try to control greyback beetles and frenchie beetles which were devastating the sugarcane crops.
