According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, there are several explanations for how the city of Brisbane, Queensland got the name Bris Vegas (or Brisvegas). In general, it is a tongue-in-cheek nickname given to Brisbane based on an ironic comparison to the gambling capital of Las Vegas in the USA. The Bris Vegas nickname is usually a term used by out-of-town visitors on Brisbane's (perceived) small-town tackiness.

BrisbaneCity Along with the rest of Queensland, Brisbane operates on Australian Eastern Standard Time -- which is 10 hours ahead of GMT. However, during the beautiful hot and humid summers, Queensland doesn't change to Summertime or Daylight Saving with the rest of the East Coast of Australia. This means it is an hour behind major commercial centres such as Sydney, Melbourne and our National Capital Canberra.

This contentious issue was put to a vote once and many people in Queensland's conservative regional areas to the West, North and Far North of South East Queensland elected not to keep in time with the southern States.

The cane toad (Bufo marinus) is one of Queensland's best-known feral animals. Originally from South America, cane toads came from Hawaii in 1935 when 3, 400 Cane toads were released into far north Queensland cane fields to try to control greyback beetles and frenchie beetles which were devastating the sugarcane crops.
