Things To Do On Stradbroke Island |
North and South Stradbroke Islands provide a sheltered bay adjacent Brisbane and the northern point of the Gold Coast. North Stradbroke Island has some of the most spectacular scenery found in Queensland. White sandy beaches stretch into an endless horizon fringed by the aqua blue ocean, while a system of freshwater lakes in the island's centre provides beautiful picnic and swimming spots. The three townships still have a village atmosphere offering a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, not to mention a variety of cafes and restaurants.
Camping on Stradbroke Island
Foreshore campsites are accessible by 4WD vehicles only, so if you
decide to camp on the beach, remember a 4WD permit is necessary.
Camping permits must be booked and purchased prior to arrival and tent
tags must be attached to tents.
Diving around Stradbroke Island
North Stradbroke Island has some of the best dive sites in South East
Queensland, just a few hundred metres from shore. The reefs surrounding
Point Lookout are home to turtles, dolphins, whales, manta rays and
reef fish. Try snorkelling or scuba diving. Manta Lodge & Scuba
Centre at Point Lookout offers daily dives at superb island locations
just minutes off shore. An open water certificate is required however
beginner, one day resort, advanced and specialty diving courses are
available.
Fishing fron Stradbroke Island
North Stradbroke Island boasts a range of fishing options envied by
many other locations. The diverse types of fishing available ranges
from the ‘bread and butter' species of tailor, bream, whiting and
flathead from the beaches, through to the more specialised offshore
species of mackeral, wahoo and marlin. Straddie is unique in that it
has fishing available from its beaches, rocky headlands and surrounding
calm and offshore waters.
Whale Watching from Stradbroke Island
Whales can be seen from a number of vantage points at Stradbroke
Island.In the Southern Hemisphere humpback whales migrate from their
summer Antarctic feeding grounds, along Australia's continental
coastline to tropical regions to breed and calve in winter. Most
humpbacks return to the same breeding grounds for successive years.

Sandboarding on Stradbroke Island
A slightly more extreme sport is sandboarding. Climb to the top of one
of the sand dunes for a spectacular view of a naturally formed sand
bowl, with clear blue ocean as a backdrop you'll soon, hit the slopes.
"Style" is entirely up to you - sit, stand or do it lying down. There's
a gentle slope for beginners, but it won't be long before you take up
the challenge of the steeper slopes!
