Stormy Weather
Severe storms are the most frequently occurring hazard in Australia, particularly Queensland, being part of living in Brisbane. The beginning of Springtime is usually the start of the storm season in Brisbane with the biggest storms in South-east Queensland occurring in the warmer months from September-October all the way through to March-April.

There's not much we can do to stop a storm, but there are plenty of simple things we can do to prepare to protect our homes and families from the impact of storms. Severe thunderstorms are defined by the Bureau of Meteorology as storms that generate:
  • Hailstones with a diameter of 2 centimetres or more
  • Wind gusts of 90 km/hr or more
  • Flash floods
  • Tornadoes
Severe thunderstorm warnings are issued by the Bureau of Meteorology www.bom.gov.au/weather/qld and are issued when:
  • A severe thunderstorm is reported, or there is strong evidence of a severe thunderstorm, and it is expected to persist;
  • Existing thunderstorms are likely to develop into a severe thunderstorm.

Storm Safety Checklist

Before a Storm

  • Tidy up loose items in your yard (including outdoor furniture and toys) and trim overhanging tree branches. Do not attempt to trim trees near power lines.
  • Clean and check roof and guttering, making sure roof tiles and sheeting is secured.
  • Keep a battery-operated torch and radio close by. Keep spare batteries.
  • Have a first aid kit handy.
  • Have a list of emergency contact numbers.
  • Keep a supply of plastic shopping bags to use as sand bags for emergency storm water diversion.

During a Storm

  • If power is lost during a storm, disconnect all electrical items.
  • Listen to your local radio station for information updates.
  • Do not use wet or damp electrical items.
  • Stay inside and shelter away from windows in the strongest part of the house (usually the bathroom or cellar).
  • If you're outdoors when a storm hits, find emergency shelter - not under a tree.
  • If driving, stop clear of trees, power lines and streams.
  • Avoid using the telephone during the storm.

After the Storm Passes

  • Listen to your local radio station for official warnings and advice.
  • If you need emergency assistance, call 000 or the State Emergency Services (SES) on 132 500.
  • Beware of fallen power lines, damaged buildings and trees and flooded watercourses.
  • Stay at home and help others - don't go sight-seeing
  • Alert others of any danger.

Our Vision...

The Move to Brisbane
Moving from interstate or overseas is a big move and usually entails relocating not just yourself, your family and your pets but also most of your worldly possessions. One thing to consider is selling your house. Real Estate agents are probably your best contacts for tips on selling house and moving out state. Moving itself can mean a lot of stuff to pack and ship. You look around your home and think "How am I going to get all of this stuff from here to Brisbane?" "Where do I start?" "What should I leave behind?" "How much is it going to cost?" and so forth.
